3-Piece Bedroom Set Commissioned for Mark Hopkins San Francisco Residence
Carved and decorated Louis XVI three piece bedroom suite comprising a full size bed, side cabinet and commode. Cabinet and commode are marble topped. The solid cherry suite features garlands of flowers, gilt trim and handprinted panels in the style of Virgilio Tojetti (Italian, 1851-1901). These were part of the second floor bridal chamber known as the "Pompadour Room" of the Mark Hopkins Nob Hill mansion. Attributed to Herter Brothers. The room had an exuberant frescoed ceiling with flowing pink and blue flowers. The beds had massive window curtains and canopies. The bedroom suite was in many Hollywood films, including "Notorious" with Cary Grant, Ingmar Bergman and Alfred Hitchcock.
Mark Hopkins was known as one of the "Big Four" in San Francisco in the late 19th century. He was one of the founders of the Central Pacific Railroad. Hopkins choose to build his mansion on the fashionable Nob Hill (originally called California Hill) where his fellow multimillionaires also resided. Sadly Hopkins would not see his mansion and it was completed in 1878 after his death. The palatial mansion survived the 1906 earthquake but was destroyed in the fire that followed in the days after.

Grand Curio Cabinet Commissioned for Mark Hopkins San Francisco Residence
Pottier and Stymus Aesthetic Movement Grand Curio cabinet commissioned for the Rosewood Music Room (which was adjacent to the Library) in the Mark Hopkins residence, San Francisco, CA. The mixed metal marquetry inlay design and other decorative elements relate to a rosewood cabinet from the same room formerly in the collection of Warner Bros Studios now in a Northern California collection as well as the Lady's Secretary in the Newark Museum. The intricately carved oak leaf frieze is nearly identical to a desk commissioned for the adjacent library that had descended in the Washington St. home of Timothy Hopkins until it was sold at auction in 1997 for $96,000. The Grand Curio cabinet was not acquired by the Studios and is in near new original condition. Circa 1875-1880. Dimensions: 95"h x 84.25"w x 17.25"d. Provenance: Sacramento Bishop's mansion thence to private collector.

19th Century American Gasolier, Attributed to Cornelius & Baker
19th century American gasolier attributed to Cornelius & Baker, Philadelphia now electrified. The bronze, five-arm chandelier is adorned with the three allegorical figures on the stem, “Art, Science, and Industry”, that represent the Victorian love of symbolism. They are surmounted by three Baroque-style, female busts and have etched shades with ruffled edges. A similar chandelier was on the cover of a catalogue by the Metropolitan Museum of Art for the exhibition “19th Century America, Furniture and Other Decorative Arts”, April 16- September 7, 1970. Dimensions: 67"h x 31"w.
Cornelius & Baker of Philadelphia were described in the exhibition catalogue of The Great Exhibition at the Crystal Palace in London in 1851 as, "the most extensive manufacturer of lamps, chandeliers, gas-fixtures &c., in the United States, employing upwards of seven hundred persons in the several departments of the establishment, which has been in existence for upwards of a quarter of a century."

Kimbel & Cabus Display Cabinet
Kimbel & Cabus rosewood display cabinet with painted front medallion. Rosewood decorated with carving, gilt incising and ebonized areas; rectangular form, quarter-round ends enclosed by inlaid doors (marquetry Classical seated female figures with interior shelves); lower part of center section recessed with three relief columns on each side; circular center panel depicts a floral still life. Marquetry upper side panels depict musical themes. It's primary function in the Gilded Age was not storage but display. Circa 1865-1875. Dimensions: 59.5"h x 71.75"w x 23"d. Provenance: Michigan funeral home thence to private collector. This is one of six known: Brooklyn Museum, High Museum and private collections. Only one is ebonized. Possibly descended from the Andrew Carnegie family. Signed inside by Michael Milke who “varnish this cabinet,” dated 1870. Original untouched finish. There are only 2 known with painted center plaques. Anthony Kimbel emigrated from Germany in the late 1840s and founded a new firm in 1862, known as Kimbel & Cabus, with the French-born cabinet-maker, Joseph Cabus. Inspired by the writings of British designers Bruce J. Talbert and Charles Locke Eastlake, Kimbel & Cabus developed a line of furniture in the “modern” gothic style in the 1870s. Their furniture won great acclaim at the Centennial Exposition in Philadelphia in 1876, and is characterized by the use of ebonized (blackened or stained) wood ornamented with incised gilt decoration, inlaid tiles, medieval patterns, distinctive strap-like hinges, and forms that reveal the structure of the piece. By the late 1870s, the firm was the leading interpreter of the gothic revival style prevalent for furniture and interiors in America.

Their work is known for its complex carvings and ornamentation as well as skill of workmanship.

Spreckels.

Brothers Christian and Gustave Herter were German immigrants. The Herter Brothers firm (1864-1906), in New York, specialized in comprehensive interior design and cabinet making to the Gilded Age. Among their clients were William Vanderbilt, Mark Hopkins, Jay Gould, Ulysses Grant (for the White House), Milton Latham (Thurlow Lodge) and Ruggles S. Morse (a Southern hotel baron). Their work is known for its complex carvings and ornamentation as well as skill of workmanship.
Thurlow Lodge is the no-longer-extant Menlo Park California mansion of former California governor and United States senator Milton Slocum Latham (1827–1882) and his second wife, Mary McMullin. Mr. and Mrs. Latham commissioned the interior design for their home from the New York City firm of Herter Brothers, whose San Francisco outlet catered to prominent patrons such as Mark Hopkins, James Flood, Darius Ogden Mills, and John D. Spreckels.

Horner, having a pierce carved arched crest centering a cabochon flanked by angels and flowers, above a gadrooned molding surmounting a glazed door opening to a dial with a silvered chapter ring having applied Arabic numbers, pierced hands, with gold scrollwork in the center as well as the corners, topped by a landscape moon phase dial, the face flanked by carved griffin supports, above a case with a door having a carved Northwind mask above an elongated oval glazed opening revealing nine tubular bells and a brass pendulum, flanked by high relief carved mermaids with double twisting tails atop acanthus plinths, resting on a paneled base carved with a sleeping putto, scrollwork, and birds, above a gadrooned plinth, the whole rising on melon carved compressed bun feet.
