Grandma (Anna Mary Robertson) Moses (1860-1961) Painting "Over the Bridge, Home"

Framed Grandma (Anna Mary Robertson) Moses (1860-1961) painting, "Over the Bridge, Home". Circa 1948. Signed lower right. Bears Grandma Moses Properties and Gallerie St. Etienne labels verso.

Dimensions: Frame: 17-3/4"h x 22"w;; Sight: 10-3/4"h x 14-1/2"w.

Robertson was born in 1860 and married in 1887. She had 10 children (5 of whom survived past infancy). Moses disliked spending time knitting and sewing, but she began entertaining herself and her friends by making needlework pictures and quilts portraying colorful scenes of farm life. At 78, when arthritis rendered her unable to embroider, friends suggested she try painting these scenes instead. She worked with whatever materials were at hand, used house paint and leftover canvas or fireboard for her first paintings. As a self-taught artist, Moses had little concern for perspective or proportion. Although familiar with the hardships and sorrow of farm life, she illustrated happy childhood memories of fields and storms, barn dances, and holidays in rural New York and Virginia. She deliberately omitted telephone poles, tractors, and other elements of the effects of industrialization. She gained the nickname “Grandma Moses” from a reviewer at New York’s Herald Tribune.

Dimensions: sight: 42"h x 29-1/2"w; frame: 46"h x 34"w.

Over the course of her five-decade career, Viola Frey created boldly colored figurative sculptures, paintings, and works on paper that reflect on contemporary culture, power, and gender dynamics. While most closely aligned with the Bay Area Funk movement, Frey’s immense creative output delves into many aesthetic directions, using a distinctive and personal iconography and palette to depict human figures among objects of antiquity, flea market collectibles, and interior landscapes. Frey considered herself a bricoleur – a junk accumulator – by reinterpreting collectable figurines, philosophical ideas, personal experience, and color theory freely to create new meaning in ceramic and bronze. Her works on paper and paintings echo the sculptures, creating a dynamic back-and-forth conversation between media.
