Wilson & Evans, San Francisco 8 Gauge Double-Barreled Shotgun

A rare and handsome Wilson & Evans San Francisco 8 Gauge percussion double-barreled shotgun in a massive 8 gauge. Wilson & Evans were a well-known firm of gun makers and dealers from Sacramento, but they had a San Francisco shop for only one year: 1863-1864, so this is a rare gun.  The barrel rib has, “Wilson & Evans, San Francisco Warranted Greener’s Laminated Steel” engraved on it. Both locks have “Wilson & Evans” engraved on them. The breech has three inlaid gold stripes, the blow-out plugs are gold, and there is a gold escutcheon plate on the wrist with the initials “FGA” engraved on it. It seems entirely likely that a search of San Francisco directories of the Civil War years might produce the name of the original owner. The stock is striped, probably maple. The wrist and the forend are checkered. The mounts are engraved steel.

Wilson & Evans are discussed extensively in Mr. Shelton’s fine California Gunsmiths, and this is a very interesting example of their work. Dimensions: 47.5 inches long overall. The barrels are 31.5 inches long. Processing and shipping within the continental U.S. $65.00 plus 1.5% replacement cost insurance.

Condition:

Very good. The steel is grey overall, and the stock shows some wear. There is a very minor chip missing from the forend along the barrel. The muzzles show minor pitting and rust. The actions are excellent. Witherell's strives to provide as much information and photographs as possible but encourages in-person inspection by bidders.
