William S. Hart's Colt Single Action Army Revolver

WILLIAM S. HART’S COLT SINGLE ACTION ARMY REVOLVER.

Serial no. 290974 for 1907, .44-40 caliber 4 ¾ inch sighted round barrel with maker’s address the left side marker COLT FRONTIER SIX SHOOTER. New York style engraving with backstrap “Wm. S. Hart.” Mother of pearl grips.

Provenance: gift of William S. Hart to Dr. Roy S. Horton of Santa Ana, CA, c.1935; by descent to his heirs (affidavit dated August 12, 1974); sold at Sotheby Parke Bernet, American & European Firearms & Edged Weapons, Los Angeles, July 8, 1974, lot 28, to Jim and Theresa Earle; Colt factory letter dated April 13, 1976 and signed by M.S. Huber.

The original Sotheby’s description for this gun mentions that though the barrel is .44-40, “the cylinder is chambered for .38-40, which may indicate the gun was used by Mr. Hart for firing blank cartridges during the course of the filming of Westerns.” Dr. Roy S. Horton was the first president of the Southern California Gun Collectors Association.  Present with this lot is a gelatin silver print photograph of Hart, Horton, and other Southern California gun collectors.
