Weber & Stahl US 1850 Staff & Field Officer’s Sword

A handsome US 1850 Staff and Field Officer’s Sword, with a plain French style blade, marked on the ricasso, “Weber & Stahl, Successors to J. Luther, Cin. O.” The blade is completely plain, and has a ricasso in the French style, with the fuller reaching almost to the tang, and the shoulder being only really present on the edge. The hilt on the other hand is a handsome regulation hilt, with a leather grip and triple strand wire. The guard is handsomely done, although the casting is rather shallow, and the “US” in the guard is slightly tilted towards the guard, almost as if it were in cursive. There is no scabbard. The maker is interesting as their products are fairly rare. Some have speculated, erroneously, that he made swords only for the Confederacy, but this sword demonstrates that that is not the case. Dimensions: 36.25 inches long overall, with a 31 inch blade. Processing and shipping within the continental U.S. $65.00 plus 1.5% replacement cost insurance

Condition:

Very good. The guard is slightly bent inward, but is otherwise excellent. The grip and its wire are excellent. The blade is completely undecorated, and has signs of having been sharpened. It remains clean and bright, with a small patch of pitting at the point. Witherell's strives to provide as much information and photographs as possible but encourages in-person inspection by bidders.
