US Non-Regulation 1850 Staff & Field Officer’s Sword by Schuyler, Hartley & Graham

A very handsome 1850 type sword in the French style, the basket with an Eagle with Union Shield on his breast with panoply of flags behind him. Some people refer to this as the Chatelerault  style, although this one is indeed French made, with an oval stamp behind the quillon with the letters “FBD” in it. The guard is quite ornate, and the pommel has deeply cast decoration including an oval set in a flower-like design. The grip is fine sharkskin shaped to the hand. The wire is missing. The blade has the Schuyler, Hartley & Graham mark etched on the ricasso and the other side of the ricasso has the mark of Clauberg of Solingen. The etching on the blade includes a large spread winged American Eagle with a ribbon in its claws with “E Pluribus Unum” on it. The other side of the blade has “U.S.” flanked by flourishes. The scabbard is plain iron, and is not correct for the sword.

Size: 42 ½ inches long overall in its incorrect scabbard. The blade is 32 inches long.

Processing and Shipping within the continental U.S.$65.00 plus 1.5% replacement cost insurance.

Condition:

The sword is in very good condition. The grip is missing its wire wrap, and shows minor wear. The blade is also very good, with some wear to the etching and some staining towards the point, including signs of old rust that has been removed. It is in a plain iron scabbard that is not correct for it.Witherell's strives to provide as much information and photographs as possible but encourages in-person inspection by bidders.
