US Civil War Non-regulation Officer’s Sword with Spectacular Blade

A very fine and less usual example of Peterson’s 75, the steel “gothic” hilted non-regulation officer’s sword and scabbard this one with the American Eagle perched atop US and an Infantry Bugle Horn. The eagle has a Union Shield on his breast, and clutches a ribbon in his beak with “E Pluribus Unum: on it. He is perched atop the letters, “US,” which is inside the curve of a bugle horn, symbol of the Infantry. The grip is dark sharkskin with triple wire wrap, in a bird’s head pommel and backstrap, without ears. The blade is glorious, beautifully and brilliantly etched, marked Walsheid, Solingen on the ricasso, and with a brass proof plug on the other side, with fleur de lys, and the word “Proved.” The blade is etched with a large “U.S.” flanked by vines and garlands, and on the other side and large, spread-winged American Eagle above a ribbon with “E Pluribus Unum.” The blade was period sharpened, but remains otherwise about sparkling mint. The scabbard is steel with two carrying rings.  Dimensions: 39.5 inches long overall, with the blade being 32.75 inches long. Processing and shipping within the continental U.S. $65.00 plus 1.5% replacement cost insurance.

Condition:

The blade is truly excellent, although with period sharpening. The hilt and scabbard are dark with age patina. The grip is excellent. Witherell's strives to provide as much information and photographs as possible but encourages in-person inspection by bidders.
