US Civil War Manhattan Navy Revolver in .36 Caliber

This is a very fine Manhattan revolver retaining almost all of the original silver plate on the trigger guard and backstrap, serial number 13939. It is the second type, and was made in either 1860 or 1861. It has all matching serial numbers, including the wedge. The five shot cylinder retains all of its original engraving. The finish is an even brown, with traces of blue on and under the loading lever. The grips are excellent. The consignor bought the gun from a man who claimed to be a direct descendant off Secretary of War Stanton, who was appointed by and served under President Lincoln, but there is no documentation to this claim. Dimensions: 12 ½ inches long with a 6 ½ inch barrel. Processing and shipping within the continental U.S. $35.00 plus 1.5% replacement cost insurance.

Condition:

Overall the gun is extremely nice, but with the original blue finish turned to brown. The gun retains most of its original silver plate on the brass trigger guard and backstrap. The grips are superb, retaining their original varnish. The action is crisp and tight, but does hang up when rotating the cylinder  on occasion, suggesting a weak spring in the advance lever. Witherell's strives to provide as much information and photographs as possible but encourages in-person inspection by bidders.
