US Cavalry or Artillery Officer’s Sword with Engraved & Painted Scabbard by Spies

This is a very interesting and unusual sword by A.W. Spies. It is essentially a British 1796 light cavalry officer’s sword made for the American market. It has a fine sharkskin grip with a single twisted wire wrap. The hilt and the scabbard are steel, the hilt is blued. The scabbard is bright, with extensive etching. Interestingly, it is also painted on the front with an ochre red paint to highlight the handsome etching. This paint is almost entirely intact. The blade is a beauty, superbly acid etched, with the name “A.W. Spies” in a ribbon. Spies is an interesting maker and importer of swords, originally British, but he probably emigrated to New York in the late 1820’s or early 1830’s. The blade has standing figure of Liberty or Columbia holding a Union Shield, below a trophy of arms and a shield with 12 stars. The other side has a field of 13 stars below another trophy of arms with a striped flag in it. The etching covers 2/3 of the blade, and is really exceptionally nice. The sword is superbly balanced and quite tight. Dimensions: the sword is 35 inches long overall, with the blade being 28.875 in. Processing and shipping within the continental U.S. $65.00 plus 1.5% replacement cost insurance.
