US 1860 Cavalry Saber by Ames, 1864

A fine Ames Mfg. Co. Chicopee Mass. Cavalry saber and scabbard, marked US over CEW over 1864 on the ricasso. The leather grip is excellent with all its wire wrap. The Scabbard was chromed after the War, and there are traces of black paint on the hilt, so it may have been issued during the Indian Wars period. Interestingly, the drag has been ground down on its sides, to create a narrower profile.  Dimensions: 43 inches long overall in its scabbard. The blade is 35 inches long. Processing and shipping within the continental U.S. $65.00 plus 1.5% replacement cost insurance.

Condition:

Overall the sword is in very good condition. The front of the guard has been bent down, which was probably done intentionally. The grip is excellent. The blade is about excellent, possibly arsenal polished after the War, as there are very faint signs of wear. The scabbard is basically in good condition, but peeling chrome and rust make it appear worse than it is. Witherell's strives to provide as much information and photographs as possible but encourages in-person inspection by bidders.
