US 1859 Dated Ames 1860 Cavalry Saber & Scabbard

An 1859 dated US 1860 Cavalry Saber and scabbard. The ricasso is stamped Ames Mfg. Co. Chicopee Mass. on one side, and US over JH over 1859 on the other. The blade has seen some rough use, but is brightly polished. The grip retains some of its original leather, but the wire has been replaced. The pommel is unclearly stamped “JH.” The scabbard appears to be European, and has screws on the front and back. The 1859 date is fairly scarce, and suggests the possibility that this could have been one of the sabers shipped to Virginia prior to the outbreak of War. Dimensions: The blade is 34.75 inches long. The sword is 43.25 inches long overall. Processing and shipping within the continental U.S. $65.00 plus 1.5% replacement cost insurance.

Condition:

The sword has been brightly polished, both the brass and steel, but the scabbard appears untouched. The blade is nicked along the cutting edge, with some of the nicks being moderately deep. There is a chip out of the blade 18 ½ inches from the point. The chip is about ½ inch long and is less than 1/16 of an inch deep. The grip leather is worn, and there are small portions missing, and the wire is modern. Witherell's strives to provide as much information and photographs as possible but encourages in-person inspection by bidders.
