US 1840 NCO Sword & Scabbard by Walscheid of Solingen

A very nice US 1840 NCO sword and scabbard by Walscheid, Solingen, and so marked on the ricasso. There are no visible marks to be seen. It is in a fine black leather scabbard with brass mounts. The ricasso is about3/8 of an inch longer than those usually found: Looking at an Collins, the ricasso is ½ inch, while the Walscheid’s is 7/8 of an inch. The scabbard also has some differences: The mounts are held on by brass screws, while most NCO swords have their mounts fastened with staples or occasionally rivets. The blade is extremely nice, if perhaps a few ounces heavier than a Collins. The hilt is excellent. The scabbard is also excellent, if perhaps a bit more substantial than that of an Ames or Collins.

This is really a rather rare sword. There were a large number of swords imported for the Civil War from many makers, but Walscheid is particularly interesting as there seems to be no record of his products other than during the Civil War. The name appears most often on 1840 Cavalry swords and various officers’ swords. The 1840 NCO sword is considerably less often seen. Dimensions:The blade is 32.75 inches long. The sword overall in its scabbard is 40 inches long.

Processing and shipping within the continental U.S. $65.00 plus 1.5% replacement cost insurance.

Condition:

Very good to excellent. The hilt is stained and heavily patinated overall. The blade is nearly excellent, retaining  most of its original polish, with some minor clouding. The scabbard is very good. It may have been repaired just above the drag, but it is hard to tell. Witherell's strives to provide as much information and photographs as possible but encourages in-person inspection by bidders.
