Two Hiroshige Woodbock Prints

TWO (2) HIROSHIGE Wood-Block Prints. The smaller being Hiroshige's famous "Sudden Shower Over Shin-Ohashi Bridge" in which figures are shown crossing the high bridge, sheltering under umbrellas and straw capes. (Sudden showers are a reoccurring theme in ukiyoe-e works and here Hiroshige depicts what he terms "white rain" using thin, dark parallel lines in two directions--a difficult skill in wood-block printing.) Frame measures: 10 1/4" W x 13 1/2" H

The larger print depicts a bridge spanning a high gorge seen in the moonlight, with boats in the water below and houses nestled on the shore. Frame measures: 12 1/4" W x 16" H Both pieces in fine condition, one mat exhibiting some slight water damage.
