Superb American or British D-Guard Saber Sword

A beautiful saber of the style of the British 1796 light cavalry saber, but mounted in brass, with ornate decoration on the hilt and scabbard, and a fine, brightly etched blade. The hilt is ornately cast, with acanthus leaves decorating the bird’s head pommel and reverse “P” guard. The langets bear classical masks. The grip is finely checkered bone, and there is a gilt brass ferrule at the base of the grip, decorated with oak leaves. The blade is in the bright, with fine etching, featuring panoplies of arms, vines and florals that run to within 4 inches of the point. There is no maker’s name visible. The brass scabbard is beautifully engraved, with large panoplies of arms, and panels of florals, with a large floral flourish at the drag. The sword was almost certainly made in England, but with no maker’s name, it could well have been exported to the United States.

Condition: The hilt, grip, and scabbard are all in extremely good condition, retaining most of its original gilt finish. The blade shows wear and use, including period sharpening. There is minor staining along the blade, and the point shows signs of old minor pitting.

Size: The sword out of the scabbard is 32 inches long, and the blade is 28 inches long. In the scabbard the sword is 33 ½ inches long overall.
