Steel Afsharid Persian Dhal Shield with brass and gold inlays

A beautiful Muslim, probably Afsharid or Zand Dynasty Persian dhal of steel, intricately inlaid with brass and gold with alternating panels of Arabic calligraphy with panels of lions and other animals, each panel bordered with gold. The center of the shield has different designs, also Arabic calligraphy style. The four bosses each have a cross-like design on them. The very center of the shield has a figure of a horseman spearing a pig-like animal. The horseman has a bird on his shoulder. The reverse of the shield has a cloth cover, with velvet on the inside. There is neither cushion nor handles.

Condition: The face of the shield is in excellent condition. The reverse has a light coat of rust, and the cloth is loose and worn, with a slice in the center. The iron on the reverse has an area where the lamination is slightly separated.
