Soldier R. W. Travis Ninth Plate Tintype

A cased ninth plate tintype of R. W. Travis from July 16, 1862.  The image is dark but he appears to be wearing a dark colored uniform, This could be either Rufus W. Travis of Battery “H” 4th New York Heavy Artillery, or R.W. Travis of the 3rd North Carolina Cavalry.  The subject appears to be wearing a dark overcoat and has a lanyard around his neck, and some brass buttons are visible. The identification is inside the case in pencil, and only partially legible. The tintype has a narrow gold matte, and is a leatherette case that is separated at the hinge. Dimensions: 2.25 by 2.88 by 0.5 inch in the case when closed. Processing and shipping within the continental U.S. $30.00 plus 1.5% replacement cost insurance. 

 

Condition:

The image is fairly dark, and the case is separated at the hinge. The matte is slightly bent. The case is scuffed and a bit of the leather has flaked off, and the top and bottom may not match. Witherell's strives to provide as much information and photographs as possible but encourages in-person inspection by bidders.
