An extremely fine sixteenth plate tintype of a possibly Confederate Virginia soldier wearing a grey coat with white bands across the chest, and a blue forage cap. This may be the uniform of the Virginia Mounted Rifles who are known to have worn a similar uniform at the beginning of the War. The blue forage cap was also common among Virginia troops, and remained regulation for some units throughout the War. This image shows a young man in a fairly high collared tunic with a single brush epaulette, so this may even pre-date the War. It is in a paper matte inside a gold matte, in a very nice leatherette case with a red velvet pad. Dimensions: 2 3/8 by 2 7/8 by 5/8 in the case when closed. Processing and shipping within the continental U.S. $30.00 plus 1.5% replacement cost insurance.
Condition:
Excellent overall. The paper matte has a small torn area, but the image, the gold matte, and the case are all excellent.
