Plains Rifle in Percussion with Round Barrel and Full Stock

A very interesting Plains rifle, with aspects that suggest use in the Civil War. The rifle is in .38 caliber, with a heavy round barrel that has no visible marks. It has a percussion bolster, but the lock is original percussion. The full stock has a split exactly down the center, so it may have originally been built from two pieces of wood. The gun has undergone some field modifications and repairs, including rawhide at the wrist that has been shrunk to hold, and is bolstered by brass nails and an added brass plate, a tang placed primitive peep sight held by lead, and a brazed on extension to the trigger guard. There is also an Enfield Rifle nipple protector and chain, attached to an Enfield style ring. The single screw lock is engraved, but there is no maker on it or the barrel. The hammer has been repaired, with an added steel bar to reinforce it. There is a handsome steel patchbox in the butt, and it has a brass buttplate.  Dimensions: 48 inches long overall, with the barrel being 32 inches long. Processing and shipping within the continental U.S. $65.00 plus 1.5% replacement cost insurance.

Condition:

The gun has been extensively used and repaired as described, but remains in solid condition, with a nice finish to the wood, despite the broken and repaired wrist. The lock does not hold on cock.  Witherell's strives to provide as much information and photographs as possible but encourages in-person inspection by bidders.
