Photos of Japanese Cruiser built in San Francisco

A remarkable set of matted photos originally accordion bound as a book commemorating the Japanese Cruiser Chitose under Construction at Union Iron Works, San Francisco. The photos are all matted identically, and were clearly intended to document the construction and launching of this ship, one of the first truly modern warships in the Imperial Japanese Navy. Construction began in 1896, and there are photos of her hull being laid down, as well as a number of photos of her under construction. There are also photos of the Japanese and Americans who were involved in her design and construction, as well as of the officer that took command on her completion. Additionally there are photos of her after launch in San Francisco Bay. There are also photos of the woman who launched her, and an singer who performed at the launch.

Chitose was actively engaged in the Russo-Japanese War including the Battle of Tsushima. She also served in WWI, and was finally decommissioned in 1928.

Dimensions: The matted photos are 7.5 by 5.75 inches, and the entire book is 1.5 inches thick. Processing and shipping within the continental U.S. $30.00 plus 1.5% replacement cost insurance.
