Percussion Target Rifle by A.J. Plate, San Francisco

A very interesting percussion target rifle, made by Slotterbek of Philadelphia for Adolphus Joseph Plate, of San Francisco. This gun is of particular interest as Slotterbek originally worked for Henry Deringer of Philadelphia Slotterbek left Deringer’s employment and began making and selling copies of Deringer’s famous pistols to Plate in 1859, resulting in a patent infringement lawsuit by Deringer against Plate. This rifle is of fine design and construction, having a back action lock, double set triggers, and a silver pheasant in flight as well as a silver oval escutcheon set into the butt stock. The stock is checkered at the wrist, and has a raised cheek rest. The sights are an open buckhorn and front blade. The barrel is marked Slotter, Phila., Made for A,J. Plate, San Francisco. The dropping of the last three letters of Slotterbek’s name dates this rifle as having been made after 1863. At the breech it is marked, Wart. Gain Twist 639. The number 23 is stamped on the barrel tang. Dimensions: 48.25 inches long overall, with the barrel being 31.75 inches. Processing and shipping within the continental U.S. $65.00 plus 1.5% replacement cost insurance.

Condition:

Good condition overall. The stock has been broken and repaired at the front end of the lock, and cracks are still visible there and on the forend. There is a sliver of wood missing along the trigger guard. The hammer does not hold on cock. Both the lock and barrel are darkly patinated, and there are some tool marks at the breech.Witherell's strives to provide as much information and photographs as possible but encourages in-person inspection by bidders.
