Mounted Artillery or Cavalry Officer’s Saber Sword

A particularly handsome saber for a mounted officer of Cavalry or Artillery circa 1810. The bird head pommel has almost 3-dimensional acanthus leaves cast on it, but the reverse “P” guard is plain. The langets are larger than usually seen, each one being a spread-winged eagle with a resemblance to a phoenix, standing upright, with a wreath of laurel leaved surrounding the lower half. The fine bone grip is spiral carved, with a band of leaves at the top. The curved blade is brilliantly blue and gold, with florals and military trophy with a Liberty Cap on one side, and a large spread-winged American eagle with Union shield on its breast on the other side. There are 16 stars on the shield, and the eagle has a ribbon in its beak with “E Pluribus” on it. There is no scabbard.

Condition: Condition is generally excellent overall, with the hilt retaining about 50% of its original gilding. The grip is excellent other than a small chip below the pommel. The blade is excellent, with the blue retaining almost all of its original luster, and the gold is quite bright, and more delicately applied than many swords, with the finely engraved detail showing very clearly. There is some minor staining on the bright of the blade towards the point, and some light rubbing of the blue along the edge.

Size: The sword is 35 ½ inches long overall, with the blade being 31 inches long.
