Mounted Artillery Officer’s Saber Sword

A simple but handsome Mounted Artillery or possibly Cavalry Officer’s saber circa 1810, with a plain reverse “P” guard and birds head pommel. The bone grip is carved with alternating diagonal spirals in a less usual pattern. The blue and gold blade is especially handsome, with large panels of brightly acid etched steel interspersed.  A trophy of arms at the base of the blade has a Liberty Cap atop a spear. There is a large American eagle on one side, sitting atop a Union shield with 15 stars on it. The eagle has an almost globe shaped breast, and a ribbon in its beak reading “E Pluribus Unum.” The other side of the blade has a standing figure of Columbia, leaning against a pillar, wearing a feathered headdress. The bright panels have flowers and vines. There is no scabbard.

Condition: The guard is bent, and the grip has two moderately large chips, and two cracks. The blade is in very good shape, with the blue largely intact. There are about a dozen small nicks in the edge of the blade. The bright of the blade retains most of its original luster, but there is a stain about 12 inches from the point. The finish is slightly rubbed along the edge.

Size: 35 ½ inches long overall, with a 31 inch blade.
