Maynard Dixon, born near Fresno California, was a noted illustrator, landscape, and mural painter of the early 20th-century American West, especially the desert, Indians, early settlers, and cowboys. His mentor, Charles Lummis, encouraged him early in his painting career to leave California, and “travel East to see the real West”. Maynard Dixon did that. He travelled and lived in California, Montana, Utah, Nevada, Arizona, and New Mexico. The people in his paintings (since he lived among them) reflect the cultural mix of the American West of the early 20th century. He was also influenced by his wife, photographer Dorothea Lange, who was devoted to chronicling the plight of the migrant workers and the San Francisco maritime worker’s strike. Another aspect of his work was depicting the association between man and animal. This was an essential facet of early 20th-century Western life. Indeed, the horse was a subject found throughout his career, from his earliest drawings and illustrations, to later work.
