Framed Maynard Dixon (1875-1946) pen and ink sketch. Handwritten in ink lower quadrant, "Bad Man / for John / Dad / Nov 26 '39". Bears Aaron Brothers Framing label verso.

Dimensions: (sight) 5.62"h x 4.5"w; (overall) 15.25"h x 14.12"w.

Provenance: Estate of John Eaglefeather thence to present consignor.

Maynard Dixon and Dorothea Lange had two sons, one being John Eaglefeather Dixon. The inscription on the drawing reads ''A Bad Man for John"  Dad, 1939. (Dad is Maynard Dixon). 

Dixon was born in Fresno, California and was known as a master painter and illustrator of the American West and the people living there. Early in his career, he decided to leave California and travel the West. He spent time in  Arizona, Utah, Montana, New Mexico and Nevada. He was invited to join the Taos Society. He met many settlers and Native Americans along the way and many of these appear in his artworks. His style ranged from post Impressionism to Cubism. He is noted for his ability to capture the essence of the American West.
