Framed Martin Johnson Heade (1819-1904) oil on board painting, "Sunset". Appears to be unsigned. Circa 1870. Handwritten on board verso, "6 3/4 - 12 3/4 / Vose". Bears labels verso: a) Vose Galleries, Boston, Mass. and b) Whitney Museum of American Art exhibition label, "Realism and Romanticism in 19th Century New England Seascapes / September 15 - November 29, 1989." Dimensions: 6.75"h x 12.75"w; (overall) 14.5"h x 20.5"w. Provenance: Charles Frederick Smith, Vose Galleries, Boston, Mass., Collection of William B. Ruger, Estate of William B. Ruger, Jr. Exhibitions: Southport, Connecticut, The Pequot Library, "Collector's Choice", September 26 - October 5, 1975; Stamford, Connecticut, Whitney Museum of Art, "Realism and Romanticism in Nineteenth-Century New England Seascapes, September 15 - November 29, 1989, p.11. Literature: "After the Hunt, The Art Collection of William B. Ruger, Adrienne Ruger Conzelman, pg. 187. Heade was born in Pennsylvania and initially studied portrait painting under Thomas Hicks. He then travelled extensively in Europe and America and began painting landscapes and marsh scenes in a more Luminist style. Very good with two small bubbles in center area of sky (largest .25" diameter). Otherwise very good condition. No signs of inpainting or restoration under UV light.
