A Brizard Basket Collection, passed down through five generations of direct family descent:
Established in 1863 in Arcata, California, by Francis A. Brizard (1839–1904) and his sons Paul, Marcel, and Henry, A. Brizard supplied goods to nearby gold mining operations. According to family tradition, Paul A. Brizard (1871–1957) began marketing Native American baskets and cultural artifacts around 1908 through the family store on Main Street and a catalog titled Indian Baskets / Hupa & Klamath Tribes / A. Brizard Arcata, CA.
Following Paul and Marcel’s passing, the collection was inherited by Marcel’s son, Alexander I. Brizard (1899–1972), then by his daughter, Francis Brizard Hunt (1927–2021), and subsequently by her daughter (b. 1953).
