JBA Stamped 1860 Cavalry Saber with M Stamp

A very interesting 1860 Cavalry Saber and Scabbard probably made by Tomes, Melvain & Co. of New York, and marketed by J.B. Allere of Chicago. The ricasso in stamped JBA on one side, and has a small M on the other. The pommel is stamped AGM.  Other than that, the saber is a fairly standard 1860 Cavalry Saber, with leather wrapped grip with brass twisted wire wrap. The blade has been period sharpened, and has a few minor nicks along the edge. The scabbard is complete and sound. The identification of the sword is somewhat speculative, but a number of similar swords have been noted, and the theory seems sound. The pommel stamp suggests that the pommel was a Roby product.  Dimensions: The blade is 35 inches long. The sword in the scabbard is 42.375 inches. Processing and shipping within the continental U.S. $65.00 plus 1.5% replacement cost insurance.

Condition:

Very good condition, with the grip wrap complete, and the hilt without any bends. The blade is grey, and has a few minor nicks along the edge. It spears that the blade was period sharpened, especially at the point, where it is sharpened along the back edge for the first inch or so. The scabbard is dark, and has some pitting, but is complete and very sound. The drag has some heavy pitting. Witherell's strives to provide as much information and photographs as possible but encourages in-person inspection by bidders.
