Horstmann Artillery Style Officer’s Sword with Cast Brass Hilt

This sword has an exceptionally nice officer’s sword blade with scabbard, and a cast brass hilt in the style of a Mounted Artillery Officer’s sword. It is difficult to tell when it was assembled, but there is no doubt that the blade and scabbard are of the Civil War period. The hilt is cast in an ornate style, with simulated large pebble rayskin grips. The pommel, which also appears to be an integral part of the hilt, has the usual band of laurel leaves along its lower edge. The guard has leaves and flowers cast into it, with a large 4 petal flower in the center of the guard. The grip has been painted black. The very fine blade has the Weyersberg King’s head stamp on the ricasso. The other side of the ricasso is etched, W.H. Horstmann & Sons Philadelphia. The blade is beautifully etched with trophies of arms, one of which has a Union Shield, a ribbon with “E Pluribus Unum,” a large “U.S.” a spread winged American Eagle, and another trophy with US Flag banner.  The scabbard is plain steel with a somewhat more ornate drag, and fits the blade perfectly. Dimensions: 40 inches long overall. The blade is 33.5 inches long. Processing and shipping within the continental U.S. $65.00 plus 1.5% replacement cost insurance.

Condition:

About excellent overall condition. The blade is bright and clean, with two very small dark spots, but no rust. There is some minor staining from dried oil.
