George Shreve & Co. San Francisco Carving Knife

An early George Shreve & Co. carving knife with mother of pearl grip and silver ferrule and pommel marked on the blade “GEO. C. SHREVE & CO. SAN FRANCISCO CAL’A.”  On the other side of the blade it is stamped, “Landers, Frary & Clark.” The knife has an interesting curved pommel slightly resembling a quail’s head, and pommel and ferrule are decorated en suite with curving Victorian designs. The style of the address suggests that this is an early piece. Shreve began doing business in San Francisco in 1852, and this probably dates to the first 20 years or so of Shreve’s business.

Condition: Very good condition. The blade shows signs of sharpening, and has a couple of minor spots of old rust. The handle is excellent.

Size: 15 ½ inches overall, with a 9 ½ inch blade.

Processing and shipping within the continental U.S. $45.00 plus 1.5% replacement cost insurance.
