GENERAL LEONARD WOOD’S COLT POLICE REVOLVER.

Serial no. 4107, .38 caliber 5 inch round blued barrel the left side with attached plaque engraved GENERAL WOOD. Blued frame. Mother of pearl grips. In presentation case.
Condition: Fine. Thinning and loss of blue to barrel and frame. Small chip on inside of front toe of left grip.

Provenance: gifted to General Wood by US Army in Vera Cruz, May 6, 1914 (presentation plaque); by descent to his heirs; sold to Ray Smith of Santa Fe, NM; Sold to Bill Smythe of Albuquerque; sold to John Wilson of Pyote, TX; sold to Jim and Theresa Earle, February, 1974 (John Wilson letter dated February 17, 1974).

General Leonard Wood was a physician and Army officer who served in the Arizona Territory and New Mexico before being assigned as personal physician to Grover Cleveland and William McKinley.  During the Spanish-American War he and Theodore Roosevelt organized the Rough Riders, and he later served in the Philippines. He was named Army Chief of Staff in 1910, serving until 1914, and afterwards he was heavily involved in the “Preparedness Movement,” which led to, among other things, the introduction of the Selective Service.

Among Jim Earle’s documentation is a note from Wood’s biographer reporting that he could find no evidence of General Wood traveling to Vera Cruz in May of 1914.  It may be that the Army brass in Vera Cruz, established there after the US occupation of that city which began in April of that year, may have commissioned and sent this gun to General Wood on the occasion of his retirement as Army Chief of Staff.
