Five Photo of Post-Civil War soldiers & Cadets

Five images- two tintype and three cabinet cards of either late Civil War or just after the Civil War soldiers and cadets. The first tintype shows a US Military Academy cadet in cadet grey coat with a dark blue kepi with the USMA insignia on the front. He is seated, staring belligerently into the camera. The second tintype is a young man in a blue uniform coat with 7 buttons, wearing a forage cap with regimental numbers on it. The third image is a cabinet card of men of the 39th New York National Guard, known as the Garibaldi Guard, wearing grey uniforms with cockerel’s feathers in their hats, seated playing cards and drinking beer. One of them is holding an 1860 staff and field officer’s sword and two are wearing medals. The name Jacob Herrold is written on the reverse. The fourth image is a standing portrait of a cadet and is signed on the reverse, “Truly Your Friend, C.H. Cochran, U.S.M.A. 1882.” Cochran was commissioned Lieut. In the 7th Infantry in 1883, and died in 1892. The fifth, also a cabinet card, is a youg mn in a grey frock coat and kepi holding aSpringfield Trapdoor Cadet rifle, and he is wearing a Civil War era oval US belt plate. The image was made in Knoxville, Tenn., and has “Cadet Percy A. Simmons, Knoxville Tenn.” written at the bottom.  Dimensions: The tintypes are each 2 ½ by 4 inches. The cabinet cards are each 4 ¼ by 6 1/8 inches. Processing and shipping within the continental U.S. $30.00 plus 1.5% replacement cost insurance. 

 

Condition:

The tintypes are excellent. The cabinet cards are all slightly yellowed, and the two standing cadets have minor stains and foxing. Witherell's strives to provide as much information and photographs as possible but encourages in-person inspection by bidders.
