F. Schoeneman, San Francisco 12 Gauge Double Barreled Shotgun

Frederick Schoeneman was a Berlin born gunsmith who emigrated to the United States in 1851, and eventually set up as a gunsmith first in Virginia City, then in San Francisco in 1862, and again in 1873. He had stores on Clay Street, then Kearney Street, and eventually on Mission Street. The shotgun is an interesting one, having internal hammers, and a lever system for opening and lowering the barrels. The gun has some very handsome engraving on the breech, including ducks in a marsh, and rabbits in a field. There is a wild tom turkey engraved on the trigger guard. There is a silver band at the breech, and a gold cartouche by the butterfly safety on the tang. The wrist and forend are finely checkered, and almost all of the steel is engraved other than the barrels, which are Damascus. The gun is mounted with sling swivels. Dimensions: The gun is 45.75 inches long overall. The barrels are 30 inches long. Processing and shipping within the continental U.S. $65.00 plus 1.5% replacement cost insurance.

Condition:

The steel on the barrels is dark, and the maker’s name is hard to read. The breech is loose. The barrel has several dents in it, and the muzzle has some heavy rust. The butterfly safety does not seem to work. The action works well. Witherell's strives to provide as much information and photographs as possible but encourages in-person inspection by bidders.
