Exceptional Colt First Model Dragoon Percussion Revolver

First year production 1848, Colt First Model Dragoon, serial number 3543. Matching serial numbers observed on barrel, frame, triggerguard, backstrap, and cylinder. Last 3-digits 543 observed on loading lever, inside grips, and bottom of cylinder arbor. 7-1/2 inch half octagon, half round barrel. Top barrel flat marked: “ADDRESS SAML COLT NEW-YORK CITY”. German silver blade front sight. “V” notch rear sight on hammer. Left side of frame marked 3-lines: “COLTS / PATENT / U.S.” Brass square back triggerguard, and brass backstrap. 6-shot cylinder with oval bolt stops and W.L. Ormsby’s Texas Rangers / Indian roll die battle scene, featuring the more desirable “U.S. DRAGOONS” cartouche rather than the commonly seen “MODEL U.S.M.R.” Chambered in .44 caliber percussion, weighing in at 4-pounds, 2 ounces. Two-piece varnished walnut grips. CONDITION: Excellent overall with 75-80% original blue blending with blue/grey patina on the barrel and cylinder. Very clear cylinder scene, all markings are sharp and clear. Frame and loading lever have traces of original case color. Bore is exceptional, bright and clean. Action is tight and crisp. Grips are excellent and sound with some “roughness” at the butt. These big “Magnum” revolvers saw heavy use on the Western Frontier, serial number 3534 is an exceptional example that would be most difficult to improve upon. Worthy of the most advanced collection. Processing and shipping within the continental U.S. $35.00 plus 1.5% replacement cost insurance.
