Early Landscape Photos, Some California

1879 albumen print photo of the California State Capitol Building in Sacramento. There is a crease running through the image, but it is otherwise very fine and remarkable, showing the dirt streets running around the Capitol. The image is 8 3/8 by 6 3/8, matted on a piece of cardboard 11 1/8 by 9 ½ inches.

Large albumen print photo of Mt. Vernon, showing the rear elevation. The image is mounted on heavy paper. The image is 8 3/8 by 6 inches. The matte is 14 by 11 inches. The image is excellent, but the matte is slightly dented at the corners.

Albumen print photo of Independence Square in Montevideo, Uruguay. The image is extremely sharp and clear, but the mounting is slightly warped. The print is 8 7/8 by 6 7/8 inches. The matte is 11 ½ by 9 ½ inches. 

Beautiful albumen print photo of a cloister, looking down a covered walkway with pillars and arches on the right. The image is very faintly tinted, and is 8 by 9 7/8 inches in a larger matte, 11 ½ by 13 3/8 inches. The photo is excellent, but the matte is slightly yellowed. 

Albumen print photo of Buckingham Palace, London. One corner piece is torn. The image is 11 ½ by 4 ¾ inches, with the matte 11 ¾ by 8 inches. The matte is slightly wrinkled. 

A wonderful albumen print photo of a stage coach with passengers, one with a pick, another with a sombrero. It is in front of a saloon called “Buckeye Cabin” with a sign saying, “Root, Hoot, Die.” The coach is painted with “Pioneer Stage Line,” and All Points Southern Mines.” This may be a movie still, as there appears to be a television aerial in the background. The photo itself is rounded at the corners on a larger grey matte. The image is 13 by 9 3/8 inches. The matte is 13 ¾ by 10 ¾ inches, and in excellent condition.

Albumen print of a farm with family in early car. The photo is 10 by 8 inches on a 12 by 10 matte. There is slight staining in the upper right corner, and the matte has very minor nicks along the edge.

Landscape albumen print of a large house or hotel, with topiary hedges, bordered by an industrial looking fence. The print is 9 ½ by 7 inches and the matte is 12 ¾ by 11 ¾ inches. The matte has some stains and minor edge knocks, but the print is excellent.

San Francisco’s The Union Club on top of Nob hill, with Grace Cathedral to the side, circa 1900, albumen print. The print is excellent, and is 9 5/8 by 7 inches. The matte is stained with water damage and is 13 by 12 inches.

A View of early San Francisco with Alcatraz and Angel Islands in the background, the Bay has a number of clipper ships and other sailing ships on it. The albumen print is excellent. The matte has a corner missing and is slightly stained. It measures 9 ¾ BY 7 inches, and the matte is 13 by 12 inches.

Scene in Chinatown, San Francisco. A street scene with signs in Chinesewith Chinese lanterns. The print is very good with a slight tear on the left, and the matte is torn and stained. The print is 7 by 9 ½ inches, and the matte is 12 by 13 inches.

A Train Station and restaurant scene with a photographer in the foreground, circa 1900. The albumen print is 9 ½ by 7 inches. The matte is stained and is 13 by 12 inches.

A large house, probably adjacent to the Golden Gate Parl Arboretum, with exotic plants nearby. The print is 9 5/8 by 7 inches. The matte is 12 ¾ by 11 7/8 inches.

Beautiful rectangular concert hall with restaurant on the ground floor. The albumen print is 7 by 9 ½ and has a tear in the center on the right. The matte is torn and stained, and is 11 7/8 by 13 inches.

A scene of Ogden Canyon, photo by Gasberg. The print is 9 ½ by 6 ¼ inches on a grey matte, 212 by 9 inches. The matte appears to have been glued to something else and there is residue at the top, but the print is excellent.

A Boarding house with sign, “Railway Bedrooms,” over the door with a group of men outside and a seated woman, marked Albert Russell, Wiluna. The image is excellent, but the matte has dents on the edges. The print is 7 ½ by 6 inches, and the matte is 12 by 10 inches.

3 other large albumen print photos, a Victorian house with two little girls outside, a scene of a large and very fancy hotel, and a photo of Aden, probably around 1920. Al three have minor damage to the mattes, but are otherwise very good, and measure 11, 14, and 11 ½ inches wide respectively. Processing and shipping within the continental U.S. $40.00 plus 1.5% replacement cost insurance. 

 

Condition:

As individually described. Many have damage to their mattes, but most of the photographic prints are in better condition.
