Early British Military Photographs

A very nice grouping including tintypes, CDVs, cabinet cards, and a huge albumen print. The tintype include two cased ninth plate tintypes of soldiers, one wearing a Crimea Medal and pillbox hat, probably of a Dragoon Regiment, the other infantry in red coat and white belt. There are also three tintypes without cases, one of an apparent Dragoon in uniform with helmet and sword, one of two musicians in uniform with euphonium and cornet, the other of two men in uniform with pillbox hats each with light infantry bugle horn badges. Then there are three very fine and rare CDV images, one a CDV-tintype of a handsome Highland officer in glengarry bonnet with black cock’s feathers, one of Admiral Sir George Stenich, 1st Lord of the Admiralty in uniform with a very early tall cocked hat, and the other of two New Zealand cadets in uniform with Westley-Richards Monkey-tail short rifles! Finally there are three cabinet cards, one of an officer in a Norfolk jacket uniform with medal ribbons, with a pistol in holster on his belt, and gauntlets, tentatively identified by Mr. Buxtun as Lord Baden-Powell, founder of the Boy Scouts and hero of Mafeking. The second cabinet card is of a company of Highland Infantry in glengarry caps holding Snider-Enfield rifles with their officer holding a basket-hilted broadsword, probably Black Watch Volunteers from Dundee. Then there is a faded cabinet card photo of 11 soldiers with two bicycles, the photo from Liverpool. There is a paper photo from a California magazine of Capt. Lapidge of the Royal Navy, Chief Paymaster of the Navy. Finally there is a very large albumen print photo of a Hussar officer in dress uniform with pattern 1821 light cavalry saber.

Dimensions: The albumen print of the Hussar officer is 11 ½ by 13 inches. Cabinet cards are 4 1/8 by 6 ½ inches. CDVs are 2 ½ by 4 inches. The tintype without cases are 2 5/8 by 3 ½, and the cased images are 2 3/8 by 2 7/8 inches in matted half cases.
