Eaglehead Sword Saber and Scabbard

A truly remarkable eaglehead sword, circa 1820, with superb fire gilt hilt and scabbard, and an outstanding blue and gold decorated pipe-backed blade. This is as fine an example of the American eaglehead sword as one could find, in excellent condition, with brilliant blue and gold, and the guard with an eagle headed serpent meeting the eagle of the pommel, the serpent’s back having nearly 3-dimensional oak leaves protruding from it. The quillon terminates in a fiddle head design, and the langets both have high-relief oak leaves and acorns on them. The grip is beautifully carved bone with a spiral design with three strands of silver wire in the grooves. The scabbard is also beautifully fire gilt, with a large trophy of arms engraved between the upper two bands, and large oval shields on the top two bands. The drag of the scabbard is engraved with large laurel leaves. The blade is massive, and gorgeously decorated, with panels of bright acid etched steel between the areas of bright blue and gold. One of the bright panels has “Warranted” etched in it, and the one on the other side has a rampant lion in it. The decoration in the blue and gold includes a standing winged angel or figure of Victory blowing a trumpet. Trophies of arms include a Tarleton helmet, various classical weapons, flags and tympani. There are a number of garlands of flowers in both the blue and gold and the bright decoration, which all extend to within 7 inches of the point. This sword is a masterpiece of the sword cutler’s art, and as well as being spectacularly decorated, is superbly balanced.

Condition: The condition of the sword is superb, the hilt, scabbard, and grip all being in near perfect condition. The blade is excellent, with brilliant blue and gold. The bright area behind the point is slightly stained, but retains most of its original polish. This is undoubtedly one of the finest eaglehead swords of the Napoleonic era extant in the world.

Size: The sword out of the scabbard is 36 ¼ inches long, with the blade being 31 inches long and 1 3/8 inches wide. The sword in scabbard is 37 inches long.
