Eaglehead Sword for Mounted Officer

A beautiful highly ornamented eaglehead sword for a mounted officer, with reverse “P” guard with 3-dimensional gilt branches and floral decoration leading to an open mouthed eaglehead pommel with integral faceted backstrap, circa 1820. The quillon is an eagle’s head, and there are large langets that echo the floral designs on the guard. The grip is carved bone with diagonal fluting in the center, above an ornate ferrule. The blade has alternating panels of fire blue and gold, and also windows of acid etched bright steel. The blade is probably French made, with typical military trophies, one of which has a spear with a liberty cap at the top. The curved blade has a broad central fuller. The brass scabbard is beautifully engraved, with a large American eagle with Union shield between the upper bands. There are also broad bands of floral engraving at top, middle, and at the drag. The reverse is plain.

Condition: The sword is in overall extremely good condition. The blade retains most of its bright blue and gold, although it is slightly worn along the edge. The bright of the blade has some dark staining, especially along the edge, and a small flaw in the steel, also along the edge, but is mostly bright. The guard and pommel are excellent. The bone grip has one long crack along the reverse. The scabbard retains about 75% of its original gilding. There is a small dent about three inches from the bottom of the drag.

Size: The sword is 37 ¼ inches long overall in the scabbard. The sword out of the scabbard is 36 ½ inches long, with the blade being 31 inches long.
