Eaglehead American Mounted Officer’s Saber Sword with Upswept “D” Guard

A remarkable and superb eaglehead pommel mounted officer’s sword with bright fire gilt hilt and scabbard, and brilliantly blue and gold blade, with a dramatic upsweep to the “D guard. The guard curves upward to a point soon after leaving the pommel. The guard then sweeps down to form the crossguard, terminating in a dragon’s head quillon. The langets are large and triangular shaped, each with a fasces and a torch on them in high relief. The grip is handsomely carved bone, withcheckering under a fan shaped arch on each side. The gilt brass scabbard is extensively engraved, with a large American eagle with a Union shield between the top two mounts. The wide, curved blade is beautifully blue and gold on its upper two-thirds, with trophies of arms with Liberty Caps atop spears, and one having a large Union shield. The other side has a dramatic American Eagle with upswept wings, with a Union shield on his chest having 15 stars. Above that is an urn with a face on it. The bright part of the blade retains almost all of its original polish.

Condition: Condition is excellent other than the very fine grip, which has a small chip just below where the guard joins the pommel, and a fine line crack on the right side, just above the ferrule. There is very minor wear on the blue and gold on high spots from being drawn. The reverse of the scabbard has lost some of its gilding, but this is undoubtedly one of the finest eaglehead sabers of its period remaining in the world.

Size: The sword is 38 inches long overall in its scabbard. The sword out of the scabbard is 37 ½ inches long, and the blade is 31 ½ inches long.
