Double Cased Quarter Plate Images of Soldiers, One Eating Hardtack

This is an exceptional double cased pair of images in a superb Union gutta percha case, showing a group of 5 soldiers in shell jackets, one of whom is holding a canteen while putting a piece of hard tack in his mouth. The other side shows possibly the same man alone in vest and slouch hat holding a tin cup and bottle, probably of whiskey, in front of a painted camp scene with an American flag by his right side. Both images have touches of paint- the left hand image having the soldiers’ trousers painted blue, and the right hand image with the flag painted.

The images have matching gold mattes. The case is beautiful, with something like a coat of arms on front and back. Dimensions: Each side is 4 by 5 inches in the case. Processing and shipping within the continental U.S. $30.00 plus 1.5% replacement cost insurance.

Condition:

The case is essentially mint, as are the mattes and glass. The images are very sharp.  Witherell's strives to provide as much information and photographs as possible but encourages in-person inspection by bidders.
