Civil War Heavy Artillery Albumen Prints

Two very interesting photos of Civil War period Heavy Artillery on the West Coast, one at Fort Canby on Cape Disappointment at the mouth of the Columbia River in Washington, the other outside of Novato in California. They are each mounted on card. The first shows a fortification with three heavy Rodman guns on an estuary, or possibly pointed across the mouth of the Columbia. They are mounted on iron slides, and there are stacks of cannon balls to the side. Beneath the image is written, “Cannon at Fort Canby.” The second image shows a heavy gun on an iron naval style carriage, next to railroad tracks. At the muzzle is a soldier in sack coat and slouch hat, and at the breech is a sailor in Civil War era uniform and hat. Written on the reverse is, “1st California Vols. Just Outside Novato.” The gun is at least a 42 pounder but has a cascobel and loop for securing with ropes. There are several interesting buildings in the background. Also, a stereo card of stacked cannon balls. Dimensions: The first image is 8.25 by 5 inches. The second image is 6.75 by 4.75 inches. Processing and shipping within the continental U.S. $30.00 plus 1.5% replacement cost insurance.

Condition:

Both images are clear, but slightly faded. The second image is darker and clearer, but has yellowing around the edges, and there is a small stain on the lower left. Witherell's strives to provide as much information and photographs as possible but encourages in-person inspection by bidders.
