Civil War Era Sailor with Tarred Hat Cased Sixth Plate Ambrotype

An excellent and rare ambrotype of a Civil War era sailor with a tarred sennet hat in his lap. The cap ribbon has a ship’s name on it that can probably be made out. It appears to begin with “Val”. He is seated in front of a painted backdrop showing a ship-of-the-line. The image is in a leatherette case that is a little wobbly but intact. The matte is an unusual and attractive one, being oval at the top and square at the bottom. Dimensions: 3 1/8 by 3 5/8 in the case on one side. Processing and shipping within the continental U.S. $30.00 plus 1.5% replacement cost insurance.

Condition:

Excellent, although fairly dark. The details are clear and sharp. The case is slightly sprung on one side, and the leather hinge is loose. Witherell's strives to provide as much information and photographs as possible but encourages in-person inspection by bidders.
