Brass Hilted Cutlass, purportedly Confederate

A very interesting brass hilted short saber made from a yataghan shaped bayonet blade. The hilt is made of a simple brass stirrup guard with a nicely shaped quillon, and a cylindrical ribbed brass grip with a larger rib for the pommel, in which you can see a very professionally set tang end. The blade is from a US style saber bayonet, and there are very faint traces of multiple lines of marks on one side of the ricasso. The owner believes that it is Confederate, but I have found nothing similar. The blade is almost certainly American made, based on the shape. Dimensions: 26.875 inches long overall, with the blade being 22.25 inches. Processing and shipping within the continental U.S. $65.00 plus 1.5% replacement cost insurance.

Condition:

The brass hilt is very good. The blade is worn and stained, with some faint red rust on one side. The point is slightly rounded, and is some pitting right at the point. Witherell's strives to provide as much information and photographs as possible but encourages in-person inspection by bidders.
