Provenance: confiscated from Bill Carlisle in 1919 at the time of his capture; acquired by Sheriff George J. Carroll of Laramie County, WY; by descent to his great-grandson John R. Ziemer (notarized statement dated July 2, 1997); consigned to Brian Lebel’s Old West Auctions, Denver, CO, June 23, 2012 and sold to Jim and Theresa Earle.

Bill Carlisle is often referred to as the last of the train robbers. He was convicted in 1916 for three train robberies, during which its recorded that he gave money to a porter to make up for his lost tips, paid one dollar for a man’s breakfast, and bowed to a woman who tried to take his gun. He escaped to commit one more robbery in 1919, but found that most of the passengers were soldiers and sailors returning from service and refused to take money from them. He was again arrested before the end of the year. After his release in 1936, he married and led a rather conventional life, penning his autobiography in 1946, Lone Bandit, in which he twice describes purchasing and using a small .32 caliber revolver to rob trains.
