American Officer’s Saber by Richard Upson

A very large and quite striking American Cavalry Officer’s Saber with a very long and broad as well as strongly curved blade, mounted with a hilt of striking and unusual design. The sword is similar in style to a British 1796 light cavalry saber, but is larger and heavier. The brass mounts of the hilt are quite heavy, but unusually shaped, with large langets, and a disc with a lion’s mask in the middle of the “D” guard. The bone grip is simply carved with diagonal grooves spaced along the grip. The heavy, curved blade is blued and gilt on its upper half, with a standing figure of Liberty on one side, and a large American Eagle on the other, with a Union shield on its breast, and a ribbon in its beak with “E Pluribus Unum.” There are 13 stars below the Eagle, and below that is a ribbon with “Richard Upson and Co.” There is no scabbard.

Note: Upson was a known New York importer of swords in the early Federal period.

Condition: The sword has seen some use, and the blue and gold on the blade is somewhat faded, but still largely visible. All of the engraving is visible, and retains its gilding. The hilt is excellent, and retains most of its gilding, and the grip is excellent. The blade has about 14 small nicks along the edge, but none very large. The point is very broad. The hilt is very slightly loose.

Size: The sword is 37 inches long overall, with the blade being 33 inches long and 1 ¾ inches wide at the ricasso.
