American Militia Staff and Field Sword with stars and circles on the blade

A handsome and unusual American Militia Staff style sword, with a stylized eaglehead pommel, floral crossguard, sharkskin grip, and possible Masonic references in the blade decoration.  The straight, double edged blade has blue and gold decoration of 5-pointed stars and gilded circles, on both sides of the blade. The crossguard consists of two large, almost 3 -dimensional floral design pieces on either side of the hilt. The center of the guard has what appears to be a setting sun with rays on both sides of the guard, but also bears a resemblance to an eye. The grip is sharkskin, wrapped with three strands of copper wire. The pommel is like an eagle’s head, but is stylized, in an unusual style. There is a narrow fuller running from the ricasso to the middle of the blade. There is no scabbard.

Condition: The sword is in very good condition, with most of the gilding on the hilt, and most of the blue and gold on the blade. There are areas of minor wear towards the ricasso, and old rust stains on the bright of the blade. The hilt is a little loose. The point is slightly dented.

Size: The sword is 37 ¼ inches long overall, with the blade being 31 ½ inches long.
