American Eagleheaded Officer’s Spadroon Sword Saber

An exceptionally fine US Foot Artillery or Naval Officer’s gilt brass Spadroon, with beautifully decorated and engraved brass mounts, and a beautifully acid etched double edged blade. The sword is somewhat similar to Peterson’s 103, although without langets. The “D” guard has foliage fanning out from the guard, and the eagle is open-beaked, appearing to be screaming. The quillon is an eagle’s talon clutching a ball. The gilt brass scabbard is handsomely engraved, with an American eagle between the top mounts, and engraved designs at top, middle, and drag. The fine bone grip is carved with diagonal lines, and bands. The long, straight double etched blade has handsome acid etching, with florals and trophies of arms, one of which includes a Union shield, and two of which have Liberty Caps. Condition: Excellent condition overall. The hit and scabbard retain most of their fire-gilt finish. The grip is excellent, with two cracks by the pommel. The blade is in overall excellent condition, with minor rubbing to the frosted finish. There are very minor rust spots in the etching, but they are barely visible.

Size: The sword is 35 ¼ inches long overall. The sword out of its scabbard is 35 inches long, with the blade being 30 ½ inches long.
