American Eaglehead Sword

This is an extremely interesting eaglehead sword with a motif of a fighting eagle repeated on large rosettes on the guard, as well as on the langets, where they are perched atop globes, suggesting a possible Marine Corps connection. The gilt brass “D” guard has a large oval rosette, featuring the fighting eagle on both sides. The quillon is a round rosette with a flower on each side. The langets are of particular interest, with fighting eagle atop globes, in front of leaves, an arrow quiver, tympani, and possibly a serpent. The grip is finely carved bone, with a fan pattern at the base, and bands of leaves. The gilt brass scabbard us extremely well and handsomely engraved, with bands of “w’s” alongside panels of oak leaves. The decoration is on the front of the scabbard only. The fine pipe-backed blade is beautifully blue and gold, with bright acid etched panels and trophies of arms, one with a Liberty Cap. There are also vines, and florals on both the blue and bright sections. The very slightly curved blade terminates in a double edge. There is a museum registration number on the back of the blade at the ricasso.

Condition: Excellent, with a sparkling near-mint blade, and the hilt and the scabbard retaining almost 100% of their original gilt finish. The bone grip has cracks down either side. The blade has the very slightest rubbing along the pipe back. The blue is intense, the gold equally so, and the bright of the blade retains a mirror-like finish. There are two tiny dents in the reverse of the scabbard.

Size: 35 ¾ inches long overall in the scabbard. The sword is 35 inches long out of the scabbard, with the slightly curved blade being 30 ¾ inches.
