American Eaglehead Pommel Saber Sword with Upswept Guard

This sword is identical in hilt and scabbard to the previous sword, although the blade and grip are different. It features a “D” guard that sweeps upward after it leaves the pommel, forming a point that is nearly level with the top of the pommel. The guard then sweeps down to form the crossguard, which also terminates in a dragon’s head quillon. The langets are also of triangular form with crossed fasces and torch. The grip of this sword is of ribbed bone. The gilt brass scabbard is similarly engraved, with a slightly smaller American eagle with a Union shield on its breast. The blade is also different, having panels of acid etched bright steel along the blue and gold section of the blade. Decoration includes what appears to be a young eagle in its nest with a Union shield having 11 stars in the field. The rest of the extensive decoration is in the form of florals and vines.

Condition: The condition of the sword is overall excellent, but the fire gilt is dulled with gilt remaining in the lines of the engraving and various deep spots on the pommel. The grip is very good, with two lengthwise cracks on either side, not affecting the soundness of the grip. The blade is also very good, with the blue and gold retaining most of its color and brightness, with a couple of minor spots on the bright panels. The bright area of the blade down to the point is stained, with the remains of old rust, and a few tiny spots of pits.

Size: The sword is 37 ½ inches long overall in the scabbard. The sword out of the scabbard is 36 inches long overall, and the blade is 30 ¼ inches long.
