American Eaglehead Officer’s Saber Sword

A magnificent American Eaglehead officer’s saber similar in style to the British 1803 pattern officer’s saber, with a beautifully blued and gilt broad curved blade, and a magnificent gilded and engraved gilt brass scabbard. The gilded eaglehead pommel and backstrap are finely detailed. The bone grip is wrapped with triple strands of apparently silver wire. The blue and gold blade has a large American Eagle with a banner in its beak and “E Pluribus Unum” on it, over a banner with “Warranted” on it. The reverse of the blade has large panoplies of arms including a Liberty Cap. The magnificently gilded and engraved scabbard has a half sun and rays at the throat, with similar designs repeated by the middle mount. Towards the drag is an almost scaled design, over a large floral flourish.

Condition: The sword is in superb condition. The gilding is about 95% intact on all the parts, and the blue and gold blade is in exceptional condition, retaining almost all of its original polish. The grip has minor age cracks, but is unaffected in its strength. The guard is slightly bent on the sideguard area, and the guard overall is slightly cruder than the rest of the sword. There is a dent in the scabbard about 6 inches above the tip.

Size: The sword out of the scabbard is 35 inches long overall, with the blade being 30 ½ inches long, and 1 3/8 inches wide at the ricasso. The sword in the scabbard is 36 ½ inches long.
