5 Civil War Soldier & Sailor Tintypes

5 interesting and unusual Civil War era tintypes, two of sailors, and three of soldiers. The sailors are both interesting in that they are wearing uniforms with unusual touches: one is wearing the standard Civil War issue sailor’s blouse, but with what appears to be blue kersey soldiers’ trousers and a colorful neckerchief. He has a beard, and has combed his eyebrows up in a devilish look. The other sailor is wearing a “Donald Duck” style cap, a petty officer’s type coatee, a checkered shirt under his sailors’ blouse, a very fancy watch chain with multiple fobs, and has what appears to be a rattan quirt next to him. The soldiers’ images include a man in shell jacket and forage cap standing in front of a painted backdrop with  tents and a cannon, a man standing next to a chair wearing a shell jacket, and a man in civilian frock coat over Army issue trousers, and with square-toed brogans standing in front of a military camp scene with the US flag, muskets, tents, and a cavalry horse. dimensions: The sailor with the quirt is 3 by 4 ¼ inches. The other sailor is 2 3/8 by 3 ¼ inches. The first soldier is 2 ½ by 3 ¼ inches, the second is 2 ½ by 3 ¾ inches, and the last is 2 3/8 by 3 inches. Processing and shipping within the continental U.S. $30.00 plus 1.5% replacement cost insurance.

Condition:

All five images are excellent, extremely clear, and sharp. The image of the man in the civilian frock coat has minor scraps that show that it was in a matte at some point. The sailor with the quirt has some flaking to the emulsion in the upper right hand corner. Witherell's strives to provide as much information and photographs as possible but encourages in-person inspection by bidders.
